Experience the excitement and unpredictability of one of ceramics' most dynamic firing processes! Join ceramic artist and educator Janet Greer for a two-part workshop exploring the history, techniques, and creative possibilities of Raku and pit firing. This workshop is designed for students with basic clay experience who are interested in expanding their firing techniques and surface exploration. Participants will learn about the materials, processes, and expectations involved before creating beautifully fired pieces during a community firing day. Workshop Schedule Part 1: Raku Introduction & Preparation Saturday, September 5th | 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM This classroom and demonstration session will prepare participants for a successful firing experience and includes: An introduction to the history and traditions of Raku and pit firing Slide presentation featuring examples of finished work Discussion of appropriate clay bodies and forms Surface design considerations Raku glazes, sulfates, and other colorants Combustible materials and firing composition Finishing techniques and post-firing care Tips for managing expectations and embracing the unique nature of atmospheric firing Part 2: Raku & Pit Firing Day Saturday, September 26 | Beginning at 10:00 AM Participants will spend the day firing their prepared work in an exciting outdoor firing experience. Multiple Raku kilns will be operating throughout the day to accommodate all workshop pieces, along with a communal pit firing. The workshop will continue until all work has been fired and cooled enough for participants to clean and reveal their finished surfaces. Every firing is different, making each piece completely one of a kind. About the Instructor Janet Greer earned her Master of Arts from Hood College and is a ceramics instructor at VisArts in Rockville, Maryland. She currently serves as President of the Frederick Potters’ Guild in Frederick, Maryland, where she is also an active exhibiting artist. Janet brings years of experience in atmospheric firing techniques and enjoys helping students discover the exciting balance of craftsmanship and chance that makes Raku so unique.
